Welcome to the AAC department at Fairfields School

We are pleased to be commissioned by West Northamptonshire Council to provide an Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) service across Northamptonshire.

Our service is called Communication for All.

What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a range of strategies and tools to help people who struggle with speech. These may be simple letter or picture boards or sophisticated computer-based systems. AAC helps someone to communicate as effectively as possible, in as many situations as possible.

What is the Communication for All service?

The Communication for All Service is a specialised AAC service which aims to provide a high-tech communication system for severely or profoundly communication-impaired young people. ‘Communication impaired’ in this context means those who have an impairment that impacts on their ability to communicate using speech and/or language and written communication. A communication impairment may result from physical, sensory, intellectual, learning or cognitive disabilities. This could include young people born with a communication impairment (for example those resulting from cerebral palsy, developmental disorders and learning disabilities such as autism) and those who become communication impaired (for example through cancer, brain or spinal injury or neurological disease). This AAC service will be for those young people most challenged in this regard.

We will be accepting new referrals from Wednesday 1st November 2023.
